Midtown Gets New Life as King Street Dispensary

Former college hangout Midtown Bar & Grill resurrect this evening as King Street Dispensary. Despite the current connotation, usually found in Colorado or California, the word “dispensary” in this case refers to South Carolina’s pre-prohibition practice of bottling and distributing liquor through state-run dispensaries.

“Nothing ever went wrong with Midtown,” says King Street Hospitality Group developer Mike Shuler, “But we started young, when we were the last stop on King Street, and it doesn’t exactly fit the scene anymore.”

With the ever-changing landscape of Upper King, its no wonder that Midtown would want to polish up a bit. When the space opened at 559 King St. in 2009, mostly young bar hoppers hung out in the area — now it’s more trafficked by groups looking for dinner or a craft beer, not for shots.

It will still be a place for smoked wings and sports, but now King Street Dispensary will feature more local spirits, 99 beers on draft and can, and some interesting large format craft brews. DJ nights are gone, but there will still be live music.

Stop by starting at 4 p.m. until 2 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with brunch.
