Shreveport pharmacists to open region's first marijuana dispensary

A pair of Shreveport pharmacists will build Northwest Louisiana’s first marijuana dispensary.

Tuesday morning, the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy awarded the region’s sole dispensary permit to Doug and Jennifer Boudreaux. The couple operates Boudreax’s Compounding Pharmacy in Shreveport and a pharmacy in Lake Charles. Jennifer Boudreaux will be the pharmacist in charge of the dispensary.

The couple was among three sets of applicants for the permit. The other proposals came from Dr. Jeff Adair and business partner Angela Carrizales and Shreveport-Bossier City businessmen Greg Morrison and Bill Windham.

“I appreciate the professionalism of everyone who applied,” Doug Boudreaux said Tuesday.

The Boudreauxs will build a pharmacy in Shreveport. They expect to start dispensing medical marijuana in about 10 months.

Louisiana is among 29 states that allow marijuana for medical purposes. While it’s still in its early stages and there are differing opinions about its application, some studies suggest marijuana can be used for medical problems like pain, nausea, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Boudreaux said he’s also pleased that the pharmacy board seems to prefer experienced prescribers.

“That seems to be the pattern all across the state, is that they’re awarding it to pharmacists that have had pharmacies for a period of time,” he said.

State law allows the board to issue only 10 permits, virtually guaranteeing a lucrative monopoly as Louisiana moves towards medical marijuana for a limited number of illnesses and conditions.

A bill pending in the Legislature would allow more permits.
